Victoria League Reception for New High Commissioner
Largely Attended London Function GOVERNOR-DESIGNATE MET . From Our Own Correspondent LONDON, February 5. The London headquarters of the Victoria League was the scene a few days ago of a very largely-at-tended reception, given to welcome the new High Commissioner for New Zealand, and Mrs. Wilford, and also to give the many colonials at present in London an opportunity of meeting the Governor-De-signate of New Zealand, and Lady Bledisloe. The Victoria League in London has good cause to congratulate itself on the successful attainment of its objectives of friendliness to Dominion visitors here and of securing kindness for English visitors to the Dominions. Its excellent policy of bringing Dominion visitors to England into intimate touch with both their own and English representatives was the subject of much appreciative comment during the afternoon. To receive the guests, Lady Forster the president of the London branch of the League, v wore a smartly draped gown of beech-brown brocade. A hat of brown velvet accented the colour scheme and was relieved with a diamond plaque at one side. Lord and Lady Bledisloe stood with Lady Forster, busily greeting the throng of guests. A cluster of soft pink flowers caught into the ermine collar of her attractive ensemble of black velvet gave a touch of brightness to Lady Bledisloe’s toilette. Black was also chosen by Mrs. Wilford, and her brocaded coat and gown were each smartly touched with grey squirrel fur. REPRESENTATIVE FLOWERS Mrs. Wilford, like the hostess, and Lady Bledisloe was given a delightful bouquet of New Zealand’ fern and early daffodils, the latter in delicate compliment to Lord Bledisloe’s county, Gloucestershire, the home of wiki daffodils. The High Commissioner for New Zealand was a rather late arrival, being delayed for some time by his duties at the busily-working Naval Conference. Until he arrived at the reception he was represented by Commander Agar, V.C. Almost every living office holder, past and present, of the Victoria League was there. In one corner, chatting with Susan, Duchess of Somerset, was the Countess of Jersey, who first started the League, and with them her daughter. Lady Dynevor, and the Duchess of Buckingham and Chandos, and Sir Eccles Snowden. Mrs Philip Snowden, who was specially welcomed back after her visit to The Hague with the Chancellor of the Exchequer, was there, and so were Canon and Mrs. Carnegie, the Duchess of Atholl, Mary Countess of Minto, Viscount and Viscountess Allendale, Julia Countess of Dartrey, the Dowager Ladv Lecon field, Lady Ludlow, Ladv Carmichael, Lady William Seymour, Mr. and Lady Beatrice Ormsby-Gore!
