DAMAGE TO HERTFORD
HUGE WAVE SMASHES BOATS AND FITTINGS THREE-DAY ATLANTIC STORM Considerable damage was done to the Federal Line steamer Hertford by stormy weather in the Atlantic. The vessel arrived in Auckland yesterday with starboard rails and lifeboats badly damaged. The ship was weathering three days of very stormy conditions two days after leaving Liverpool, on February 2. Early one morning, a particularly heavy sea crashed on board amidships. The top of the wave washed away a light-screen at the side of the bridge. The wave lifted two lifeboats out of their chocks and left them amidships on the boat-deck. Rails and ventilators were twisted or washed away, and the fore-deck bulwark rails were also bent. . Repairs are being carried out while the vessel is in Auckland.
