KILLED BY TRAIN

‘‘JIGGER" FATALITY AT KAIWAKA COMPANION THROWN CLEAR Crashing into a “jigger” on the Northern railway line, near the Kaiwaka station yesterday afternoon, a special goods train killed Mr. Ken. Highfield, aged 24, of Otahuhu. The other passenger on the “jigger,” Mr. J. Mclvor, of Whangarei, was thrown clear and escaped with a few bruises. The train left Maungaturoto for Helensville at 3.20 p.m. When it was approaching the Kaiwaka station about 4 o’clock, a head-on collision occurred with the “jigger.” Mr. Highfield, who was propelling the vehicle, with his back to tbe train, was caught by surprise and practically crushed by the train, tbe jigger being wrecked. Death must have been instantaneous. His companion was thrown clear.

Mr. Highfield was a son of Mr. Frederick Highfield, of 19 Middlemore Road, Otahuhu, He was awaiting permanent employment as a carpenter and left Auckland on Tuesday to commence work on additions at the Kaiwaka station. Mr. Mclvor was the leading carpenter on the work.
