CHAMPIONSHIP POLO
SOUTH AUCKLAND TOURNEY PROVINCIAL CUP WON From Our Own Correspondent TE AROHA, Today. Friday’s play in the South Auckland polo tournament opened with the junior cup contests, Waimai C meeting Cambridge B, the latter winning by 14 to 1. Cambridge set the pace a cracker, and scored an average of two goals j in the seven chukkas, Waimai being kept busy in defending, Seavill scoring in the final. Cambridge scorers were Brown and Speake, 5 each, Vesper and Garland 2 each. Mr. Tale acted as umpire. Matangi C, 17, v. Waihou B, 20. — Matangi showed excellent combination right through, Russell, Ranstead and Chitty displaying commendable dash. ; Individually Waihou players shone out conspicuously, and their hitting was of a high order of merit. Two of their horses were rather unwieldy. Matangi players maintained the ; aggressive during the greater part oi' ■ the game, and but for Waihou’s clever | defence would have put up a much bigger score, Goodfellow and Fitzgerald cleverly stopping several gogd j Matangi shots near the goal line. D. • Spence was in the forefront of the contest and headed off many good Matangi rushes, while C. Hines played very consistently. For Waihou Hines and Spence scored two goals each, and for the winners the scorers were Ranstead 4, Russell 4, Chitty 2. On the handicaps, Waihou won by 20 to 17. Provincial Cup.—Matangi A, 4, v. Waimai A, 5: Both teams played well up to form throughout. Waimai players were seen to decided advantage, apparently having decided to win the Provincial Cup if dashing play would achieve their objective. Matangi, which had also played successfully during the tourney, was imbued with the same spirit, so the hundreds of onlookers were treated to thrilling polo. At the end of the seventh chukka the scores were Waimai 4, Matangi 3. In the seventh chukka, Chitty scored from a long drive, and thus the figures were equal, 4-4. A final round saw Waimai make for the goal line and in round of hitting Chitty made a stroke, the ball striking Upton’s horse and glancing between the goal posts, victory going to Waimai by one goal. The Provincial Cup was presented by Mr. C. E. Macmillan, member for Tauranga, to Mr. Wilson, captain of the winning team.
Handicap Cup Semi-final. —The handicaps were Waihou 1, Whangarei 12, and TVaihou found the difference too much to make up, the final scores, including the handicaps, being TVhangarei 13, Waihou 6.
