MISUNDERSTOOD?
FOREIGNER DENIES USE OF PROFANITY EARNS WEEK IN GAOL After making a long speech in txcellent English to the effect that lie was a foreigner and so had been misunderstood m a heated moment on the Remuera tram. Otto Jabo was convicted at the Police Court this morning He was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment. Jabo pleaded not guilty. Numerous witnesses were called by the police- The troublfc was said to have started when Jabo complained that the conductor had “rogued” him over his change. There were women in the tram and the langu ige was ; articularly bad. Jabo said the witnesses seemed to think they knew everything. He had used no obscene language, but his foreign articulation had probably been misunderstood. He never used bad language, as it conveyed nothing to his mind. He could not have used ail the profanity mentioned in the charge in five minutes. After Jabo had been speaking for some time Mr. Wyvern Wilson, pointed out that he was making his case worse as he was using such , \ cellent English. His speech, too, was perfectly clear. "There were women in the car and in that confined space they had no opportunity of getting away from you," added the magistrate.
