MONEY ORDER RATES

INCREASE ANNOUNCED AMOUNTS LIMITED In keeping with the announcement regarding Australian money orders the New Zealand rate for money orders has been raised from 3d to 6*d in the pound, and a limit of £IOO has been imposed on the amount which may be transferred from the same remitter to any person in one week. An increased charge is also being made for the higher denominations of British postal orders. For the 15s | orders the increase is from 3d to sd. and for the 20s orders it is from 3d to ! 6d. The object of the action taken in Australia was stated to be the pre- ( vention of any increase in postal ; money order business during the present financial stringency. Auckland postal officials understand that the ] change in New Zealand was made in sympathy with that object, and to prevent New Zealand being used as a channel for Australian transactions in a way which might retard the readjustment of the exchange position with London which it is desired to effect. It is stated to be unusual here for the money order system to be used for the transfer abroad of large sums. No announcement has been made by the New Zealand banks of an increase in the exchange rates on London to correspond with the new Australian rates announced this week. No definite restrictions are in operation here apart from the economic one contained in the variation of the exchange rate. KAURI GUM BOARD INCREASING PRODUCTION A report stating that the improved prices of the past few months had resulted in an increase in the number of diggers on the fields, was submitted to the monthly meeting of the Kauri Gum Control Board held this week. A petition from 26 producers requesting the openiiig of the Black Swamp at Mangawai for general digging was forwarded to the Auckland Land Board. ** It was reported that a substantial quantity of chip gradings produced at the board’s cleaning works at Penrose had been sold during the month. The indications were that a ready market awaited these clean chip gradings. Reports received from abroad dealing with the use of the board’s clean chip gradings in the nitro-cellulose lacquer and varnish industries, and samples of lacquers, lacquer texture finishes and varnishes made from the chips, were submitted. The information received was of a very encouraging nature as to the use of clean chip gum in lacquer manufacture and opens possibilities of a valuable market being found for the lower gradings of kauri gum, which constitute the bulk of the remaining supplies, and which can be produced in large quantities.
