In the Market Place

PEARS DEARER BIG VEGETABLE STOCKS Pears are dearer in the City Marts and, in today’s sales, the rises apparent from last week’s rates were maintained. Many inferior lines, however, are being forwarded; numbers are coming to the markets before they are ripe. Poor grade apples are being disregarded, while a firm inquiry exists for choice lines. The small consignment of Australian oranges is finished. Tomatoes, including many from the South, are plentiful. Californian oranges are still dear and grapefruit is also offering at a high price level. From the vegetable auctions, unusually large supplies are reported. Some lines are overstocked and are hard to clear. A keen inquiry is being made for poultry. Cockerels are dear and liens, though penned in large numbers, arc maintaining last week’s rates. Ducks and drakes are easier, but pullets, owing to a decline in stocks, are returning good prices.
