FATHER OF THE LORDS
EARL OF COVENTRY DEAD AT 92 YEARS BRITISH POLITICAL FIGURE LONDON, Thursday. The death has occurred of the Earl of Coventry, aged 92, who was the oldest member of the House of Lords.
The death of the Earl of Coventry has removed an interesting figure from British politics. He had been a*peer since 1843, having succeeded his grandfather when he was only five years old. He was married nearly 55 years ago to a daughter of the second Earl of Craven, and they had four sons and three daughters. He is succeeded by his granson, Viscount Leerbjirst. eldest son of the late peer’s eldest son, who is married to a daughter of Lord Kylsant. Until recently Lord Coventry was in vigorous health, and went for a motor drive every day. He was Master of lI.M. Buckhounds from 1886 to 1892. and again from 1895 to 1900. One of the oldest members of the Jockey Club, he had seen 68 Ilerbys. He distinguished himself in his younger days as a cricketer, and had been a member of the M.C.C. for 73 years. He had always taken great interest in art. and at Croome had a valuable collection of historical pictures. The youngest son of the late earl, the Hon. T. G. Coventry* was for some years a member of the British Columbia Legislative Assembly, and is now British Columbia Trade Agent in London.
