MEN GOING BACK
MINERS RESPOND SLOWLY TO OWNERS’ APPEAL SOME IDLE FOR THREE YEARS United P..-I. —By Telegraph—Copyright Reed. 11 a.m. SYDNEY, Today. It is reported that there has been a fair response to the owners' offer to man the mines. It is unofficially stated that between 200 and 300 Aberdare miners answered the call for labour at reduced wages. These men were cavilled out of their positions three years ago, and have been idle ever since. The owners are thus assured of a nucleus of experienced miners for the reopening of the pits. The nature of the response to the colliery owners’ call for miners to work the idle pits on the northern coalfields will not be known for a few days, as the applications must be made in writing. Mr. D. J. Davies, secretary of the Miners’ Federation, says he is convinced that few. if any, of the members of his organisation will break their undertaking to decline work except at pre-stoppage rates of pay.
