ROTORUA, NOTES
From Our Own Correspondent ROTORUA, Wednesday’. A large number of cases were heard at the Taupo Court before Air. S. 1,. Paterson, S.M., on Monday and Tuesday, breaches of the Gaming Act taking up a good deal of time. * * Reports from Atiamuri state that on Tuesday, a series of-21 earth tremors were felt and recorded by observers. The quakes started at 9.35 a.m., and lasted until 10 a.m.. At 11.40 a further series accurred which carried on at intervals until 2 p.m. No shocks, were felt at Taupo, though Rotorua was affected slightly, and it is apparent that the seismic disturbance was purely local. It has been officially stated that the Government sports areas in Rotorua, will be open for play every Sunday from 1.30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Two youths , have been arrested and charged before Mr. W. L. Richards, .T.P., with breaking and entering. They are alleged to be responsible for the damage to the premises of Mr. C. G. Hodgson, where a door was hacked open with razors. Mr. H. P. Ford presided at the monthly meeting of the Rotorua County Council meeting today. The council decided to instal a telephone at the traffic inspector’s residence, the Borough Council assisting financially. Air. C. H. Newson, stock inspector, leported that he had warned several owners regarding ragwort. Air. Good was appointed to attend a meeting of No. 3 Highways Board, on March 22, and Messrs. Smythe, Steele and Jolly to attend the conference of local authorities when the matter of increase in petrol tax would be one of the main considerations. Mr. W. U. McPherson wrote that the residents of Ngongotaha had held a public meeting and decided to try and obtain an area, as a recreation ground and asked for a section from the council. The matter was deferred, pending a deputation. The manager of the National Timber Company, regretted that he had to protest against the sudden stoppage of the water supply at Ngongotaha recently. It was ppinted out that an accident had occurred but the matter had been rectified in the shortest possible time. The treasurer. Air. A. Bellingham, reported that receipts since the last meeting totalled £1.743, and the total receipts for the year were £12,195. The total expenditure for the year had been £ 15,-1 97 5s Id. The Rotorua Alotor Cycle Club met last evening and concluded arrangements for a run to Auckland, to -witness the sports at Takapuna. A wire was received from L. Running, Whakatane. stating that owing to the racing cych f having been destroyed by fire, his club would not be joining forces. •
