ON THE GREEN
Bowls and Bowlers
(By J
JACK HIGH.)
A selector of some wide experience in one of Auckland's leading clubs makes the following interesting observations on the trials, tribulations, schemes, and in some instances failures, side-slipping, iand fallacies of bowlers, holding from time to time that most important position in bowling club life. He says:"It is not my intention to indulge in destructive criticism. . Quite the contrary. In pointijlg out the errors that selectors fall into, I do so in the hope that it may lead to impartiality in respect to all players, success in carrying out the onerous duties of the most important office a bowling club has to bestow, and cause all bowlers in future to exert their utmost wisdom in the election of members to that office. “When that wisdom is not exercised, it is to be regretted that there is often the type of man elected who, according to his nature, takes a grim, gleeful delight in treating those under his jurisdiction ‘like commonplace marrionettes.’Tantkpulls the strings to make them dance to his piping. Overshadowed with the importance of his election, he takes the viewpoint ‘that sometimes it may happen that a victim has to be • found.’ That is too often one of his trials. BUFFER FOR COMPLAINTS ‘‘Moreover, he frequently becomes the buffer for every complaint and grievance from the dissatisfied and disgruntled ones, of whom there are a fair leaven in most bowling clubs. Smith does not want to play with Jones; Brown thinks he should skip; Robinson affirms that he has played lead long enough, and wants promotion; and so the merry dance goes “A tactful and diplomatic selector smoothes these difficulties away with urbanity and An autocratic one says that members must play with whom and where they are designated, : thus antagqriising and adding dissatisfaction i
HARD THINKING AND SCHEMING “A conscientious selector has to do some hard thinking and scheming to select with a view to his club’s success in pennant or inter-club competitions, keeping paramount in mind the pleasure of each unit of the association in team work. The tactful official gives all members his full consideration, while the autocrat too often ignores the personal equation ;of the construction. It may be said that much more appreciation is accorded to tact than to autocracy. “The necessary qualifications for office in the first instance is often a cause for failure. • The- most important is, firstly, a thorough knowledge of the bowling ability,, of every member of the club. Many, selectors take office totally unequipped..in this vital detail. Without it, failure and dissatisfaction must result. U 4 PERSONALITY OF THE BOWLERS “Then he must know the personality of the bowlers, as well as the playing ability. Years of intimate association should make the selector acquainted with these characteristics. He should know that Tom has no confidence with Dick as a skip, and as a consequence cannot put his back into the game; that Harry cannot get the best out of Jack as lead, two or three. Teams should be selected with these points in mind. It promotes good feeling when, all points, are considered. That goes a long way toward success. “A fallacy that some selectors have and apply is that prominent skips who have reputations to uphold must always play with, the best players as members of their teams. Nothing derogatqry to any bowler is inferred by the term, but of necessity there is a wide difference in bowling ability. The practice is fundamentally wrong. I think junior skips should have the strongest support and the stronger players, who have conspicuous and consistent skill, and. should be able to pull an inferior team through to victory. “Illustrating this point, I remember Max Walker on one occasion taking a team of septuagenarians down to Te Awamutu, and triumphantly bringing home the trophies. The old fellows were pleased, and so was Max.
“As a selector from one of the strongest clubs in the Dominion, I found little dissatisfaction during my term of office, and the club had a most successful season in pennant and interclub matches by the consideration of a sound policy. DEVOID OF PREJUDICE
“Moreover, a selector should be utterly devoid of prejudice or preference. If he possesses these regrettable characteristics, they should be wholly suppressed in the execution of his duties.
“Then there is often the masculine ‘Caesar’s wife,’ who often fills the role of selector in a bowling club. Who can fill it with all the members? Human nature is much too diverse. The selector who attempts to carry on his duties with his weakness as a basis cannot but help to fare badly.
“A wise innovation has been made at Carlton, Auckland’s strongest club. All members of the club were given a game in the pennant matches during the season. From the club’s position at the top of its section, the system is giving sound satisfaction. Other clubs would do well to follow. The Rocky Nook Club entered its full membership this season, also in the pennant competition.
GAMES, NOT BUSINESS “In conclusion, it would be well not to be forgotten that, after all, bowling is but a game, and not the serious business of life, and that the winning of matches should be of secondary importance to the pleasure and contentment of the club members. ‘The play’s the thing’ to remember.” ■YV. Baskaville, a new member of the Carlton Club, comes to Auckland with a good record of attainment at the game on the green. Last season he was a member of the Carterton Club, when he won the champion of champions singles competition for the Wairarapa, also skipping the pair that won the champion of champions pairs competition for the same district. Prior to taking up residence in Carterton, he lived in Wellington, where he was a member of the Wellington Club. In 1915 he led for E. J. Hill when the champion of champions rink compel tition for the Empire City was won by that club. The same year he led in the rink team that came out runnersup in the Dominion tournament. New Bowling Rule At the instance of Mr. T. R. Procter the Auckland Centre executive rightly 5? 1 p. r ? ved of the drafting of a rule prohibiting the use of a bowl being deliberately delivered on the disc sides instead of the playing or running side. nil«« SU^? estea rule was not without justification. Among numerous examples, it is on record that at the last Easter tournament, a skip had little possibility of obtaining the winning shot on the last head with his last bowl. All ports were badly blocked up. lie realised the difficulty of notching a win, and intentionally delivered his bowl on the disc sides straight up to the head. Fortune favoured the effort—for it cannot be said that any call on the art of bowling was made. He got the shot, thus placing the opposition team out of tbjj tournament by
what might strictly be termed by any fair-minded bowler a foul shot.
Now the Dominion Bowling Council, which is the supreme governing body for the sport in New Zealand, lias pronounced against the inclusion of the rule. In other words, the bowlers of New Zealand have now the permission of. the Dominion Council to avoid the use of the standard bias of bowls in this manner. They certainly have the approval of the supreme governing body of the game in the matter. The natural question which arises is. where were our Auckland bowlers who are members of that body to permit such a rejection? Certainly we should hear from them why such an important rule did not meet with a justifiable inclusion at the next annual meeting of delegates. Final Round of Pennants The final round of .the inter-club pennant competition will be played on Saturday next. Unless there is a complete reversal of form, the Carlton Club should again come out with the honours of the A section. Ilelensville, with three losses, and Remuera, which made a surprisingly good ■ showing in the round last week, are running neck and neck. - Manurewa again maintained a 50 per cent, win, and if that standard of play is maintained, it is almost certain that that club will win the B section. Both Ponsonby and Auckland did wel. The former, however, did. slightly better in its games against the parent clyb. Next Saturday, Ponsonby will meet Devonport and St. Heliers, Auckland playing Grey Lynn and Stanley. If the sveather is equal to that of last Saturday, the games should provide excellent bowling indeed. Hillsboro, which is holding fourth place, will meet Manurew.a. To that club is given the opportunity of showing what it can do against the leaders of the section. Naturally, all eyes will be on the result,, and it is certain that the clash will embrace the Lest selection of players from,. both sides. Dr. Krupp, who with'' his bowlers was in Auckland during the current week, has intimated that an invitation will officially - be issiied by his association to the Dominion of New Zealand Bowling Association to send a party qf Neyv Zealand. bowlers to Canada "during the yeaii 19 3?.
