Victoria League Entertains

MISS FENTON AND MISS CHAPMAN HONOURED

A very enjoyable At Home was held by the Victoria League, at the league’s rooms, Shortland Street, yesterday afternoon, to welcome home Miss E. Fenton, who was a delegate to the Victoria League Conference in London and to bid farewell to Miss Chapman, who is leaving shortly on a visit to the East.

In presenting Miss Chapman with a fountain pen on behalf of the members, Miss Mowbray paid tribute to her long service as librarian and although she was resigning from that position she was not giving up her committee W’ork.

Quite a number of visitors w'ere the guests of the league and they were particularly welcomed by Miss Mowbray. Among the visitors were Mrs. Burgess, president of the New Plymouth branch of the Victoria League; Mrs. Bewley, of Xew Plymouth; Mrs. V . D. Stewart, of Sydney, formerly of Wellington; and Miss M. M. Johnston, of England, who acted as guide to the overseas soldiers in Paris during th e war. »

Miss Mowbray wished Mrs. and Miss Gore Morton the league’s best wishes for an enjoyable visit to England and welcomed back three members, Mrs. Ambury, Mrs. Webster and Mrs. Bullock. The valuable assistance of Mr. H. Fenton and Mrs. W. Johnson were specially mentioned, also Mrs. E. Nelson, one of the many donors of books. Great appreciation was shown of a silver epergne and cake stand, the gift of Mr. and Mrs. Luckie, who are among the original members of the league. Afternoon tea was served and brought to a close a very happy afternoon. The hostesses were: Lady Sinclafr-Lockhart, Mrs. J. B. Macfarlane, Mrs. S. A. Stride, Mrs. H. Goldie, Mrs. Keeble, Miss Gerrard, Miss Kent, Misses Slater, Miss C. Murray and Miss F. Murray. Among those present:— Miss Morrison, Mrs. Sutherland, Mrs. Burgess, Airs. A. V. McDonald, Mrs C Heather, Mrs. E. Hay, Airs. PrestonChambers, Mrs. McLaughlan, Mrs. S. Chambers, Mis.
