“WELL ACTED"
“DAY WITH THE BIRDS” Many persons have “gone to tlie dogs” to obtain first-hand knowledge of greyhound coursing. but it remained for Rev. W. Deane to pay his ‘■°n° and threepence” entrance to the Flat ’ to see punting an horse racing. At the Social Questions Demonstration in connection with the Methodist ' 'onference in Sydney. Mr. Deane told of the “vultures, vanroires, gulls and pigeons” who follow the ‘Sport of Kings.” To prove he had been there, he produced a handful of betting tickets—“dead marines.” "Here’s one for nine shillings, but the horse didn’t romp home,” he said. “And another—and another—and another—all good cash for the bookmakers,” Then he scowled fiercely. "Here’s a ticket which says, T promise to pay £9—if . . Knew What To Do After the style of the disappointed • unter, Mr. Deane tore the ticket into halves, and threw them down He jumped on them, and imitated the dejected look of the punter. “That’s it,” he shouted dramatically. Broke —stone broke—all because cf the damnable vice of gambling.’ It was well acted. Rev. Mr. Deane must have gone t » some trouble to collect his pack of bookmakers’ and tote tickets.—Sydney "Guardian.”
