HOVELS TO HOUSES
SLUM CLEARANCE MEASURES IN ENGLAND POWER OF LOCAL BODIES British Official Wireless RUGBY, Monday. The determination of the Government to press forward as speedily as possible its Slum Clearance Bill is announced by the "Daily Herald.” The paper gives a forecast of the Bill, for which the Minister of Health, Mr. Arthur Greenwood, is responsible. The measure proposes to give local authorities greater powers of acquiring condemned dwellings. It is understood that financial aid will be forthcoming from trades unions to enable the authorities to rehouse displaced tenants. On taking over acquired and cleared sites the local authorities would be empowered under the Bill to sell them for commercial purposes or utilise them otherwise as they think desirable, compensation being as now on a basis of actual, not potential, value.
