POLO CHAMPIONSHIPS
TE AROHA TOURNAMENT PRELIMINARY MATCHES From Our Own Correspondent TE AROHA, Today. The South Auckland polo tournament opened with good weather and ground conditions yesterday. The first match vva.s played by Waihou B and Whangarei for the junior cup, the lirst-men-tioned being represented by D. Spence, M. Fitzgerald, F. Goodfellow and C. Hines, and Whangarei by L. R. Nelson, R. Finlayson, C. Finlayson and L. Sloane. Both teams played up in good style, but Waihou players over-raced the ball and missed their spots frequently in the early stages of the game. In fending oft! Whangarei players were the cleverer. Victory went to Whangarei by 8 to 2, the scorers for the winners being A. J. and C. H. Finlayson t2), Sloane (2), Nelson t 3) and Waihou F. Goodfellow and J. M. Fitzgerald. Mr. Wilson was umpire. Matangi A, 9, v. Cambridge A, 5. — The Matangi players were V. Chitty, R. Ranstead, J. Shaw and R. Ranstead, Cambridge being represented by W. A. Fisher, A. N. Fisher, J. Butler and R. Blennerhassett. This was a good «coring game, and the play c>f a more »ven nature than indicated by the figures. In the tirst chukka Chitty played with decided dash and scored. In the next Chitty and Townsend wrought Matangi up to 3, and Townsend registered a goal in the fourth. The fifth chukka opened with Chitty ‘coring and J. Butler, who had a fall, etired, his place being taken by Garand. In the final the scores were egistered by Blennerhassett and J, Shaw.
To Awamutu, 8, v. Waimai B. 5. — Te Awamutu was represented by D. Cay. A. Kay. L. Kay and H. Kay, and vVaimai by E. C. White, T. C. Wilson, Picot and C. Grace. The game was >ne of the fastest and most spectacular et witnessed in Te Aroha. Brilliant ong shots arid fast following up ruled hroughout, while the scoring was executed with decided dash. Early in 'he game D.. H and A. Kay scored Cor Te Awamutu and Picot, and Wilson for Waimai. In the third chukka D. Kay scored again and in the fourth, by very clever following up and correct hitting, L. Kay registered two goals. D. Kay followed in the next by scoring, while in the sixth Grace Hnd L. Kay scored for their respective teams. In the front Waimai played hard to equalise matters and scores
went to Grace and Picot. Mr. E. Aislabie was referee. Waimai A, 4. v. Waihou A, 3. —Following were the teams: Waimai, D. Snodgrass, A. Wilson, K. Henry and H. Upton. Waihou: A. Wight, M. Burke, T. A. Hines and A. McNicol. In the first chukka K. Henry scored, and in the next A. McNicol equalised matters with a goal. 33. Snodgrass registered a goal in the third, and in the fifth a score went to the credit of Upton. T. Hines came to the rescue of Waihou in the fifth and in the seventh this player scored from a long running shot, the scores then being three each. In the deciding chukka Snodgrass scored the winning hit just on call of time. Mr. Blennerhasset acted as referee.
