CHAMPIONSHIP YACHTING

RACING ON THE MANUKAU The Manukau Y’acht and Motor-Boat Club held three sailing and two power championships on the Manukau on Saturday. Weather conditions were favourable but entries disappointing. 14-Foot Open Championship. —The starters were Sea Gnome, Nyria, Janet and Sea Toiler. Sea Gnome carried away her spinnaker before the start but sailed creditably without the extra. Nyria took the lead passing Colson’s beacon, followed by Sea Gnome, Sea Toiler and Janet. On the run out Nyria still held her lead from Sea Gnome, with the others a good way back. This order was maintained to the finish. Finishing times were: Nyria, 4.13.42, Sea Gnome. 4.15.24; Sea Toiler, 4.22.42; Janet, 4.23.32. Result: Nyria, 1; Sea Gnome, 2. 18-Foot and Open Championships.— The events were sailed as one race. Champagne and Drone were the only starters. The 18-foot championship went to Champagne and the open championship to Drone. Finishing times were: Champagne, 4.57.7; Drone 4.59.3. Handicap Launch Race. —Eight boats were sent away off their handicaps in the following order; Ramona, Katui, lolanthe, Ngaroma, Rainbow Elma, Surprise and Rosita. Finishing times were; Elma (10§m), 3.38.55; Katui (17m), 3.31.5; Surprise (25m), 3.31.21; Rainbow (11m), 3.31.31; lolanthe (16m), 3.31.34; Ramona (205 m), 3.32.35; Rosita (scr.), 3.30.40. Result.—Elma, 1; Surprise. 2; Rainbow, 3. Katui did not round the dolphin on port and forfeited second place. Speedboat Championships. —There were four boats, which crossed the line in the following order: Elma Rosita, Surprise, Shooting Star. Surprise took the lead in the first lap, which she gradually increased. Finishing times were: Surprise, 4.21.20. Rosita, 4.21.56. The other two boats did not finish. Result.—Surprise, 1; Rosita, 2. Four races were held for 12ft 6in class, and three resulted in wins for Tua Tea (Grant and McKenzie). T'u*» other race was won by Red Comet. Three started in the outboard race all breaking down shortly after th* start. Miss Jamaki started again and won, the other two boats failing to finish. The officials were: Starter and time keeper, Mr. W. Vaughan; assistant, Mr. Grupen. Mr. I. Dennes was in charge of the 12ft 6in class, assisted by Mr. Gordon Millar, of the Akarana Yacht Club.

SOUTH AUCKLAND TITLES Special to THE SUN TE AWAMUTU, Sunday. South Auckland intermediate and junior championships were held at a carnival here yesterday afternoon. The Mayor, Mr. C. G. Downes, un veiled a tablet to the memory of Clarence Hunter, aged 19, a member of the Te Awamutu Club, who lost his life with Mr. Dillicar in endeavouring to rescue two people at Kawhia last year.
