GAOL FOR 14 DAYS EACH ARRIVED ON AORANGI Three stowaways who arrived on the Aorangi from Sydney this morning appeared at the Police Court and were sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment each. George Maehan, aged 25, Harry Derby, aged 28, and Joseph Thorpe, aged 28, all labourers, pleaded guilty to the charge of stowing away. “Just the ordinary stowaways?” asked Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. Sub-Inspector McCarthy: Yes. They have no chance of paying a fine. One has 3s and the others possess only a few pence between them. “They couldn’t pay a fine if I gave them the chance,” commented . the magistrate, imposing the term of imprisonment.
