STREET BRAWLING
CONTESTANTS EACH FINED £i As the result of a Newton street brawl, three young men appeared at the Police Court this morning, charged with fighting in Day Street and were fined £1 each. Norman Felton, an electrician, aged 20, and Henry Charles Flaw, a labourer, -raged 2s, pleaded guilty and George Agnew, a storeman, aged 19, denied his guilt. The trio was arrested by Constable Hynds. James O’Dell, a Transport Board employee, said he had seen the brawl. All three accused were involved and witness had told the constable at Pitt Street. O'Dell’s evidence was corroborated by that of another passerbyi Agnew’s story was that he had not joined in the fight. Flaw had come up to him as he was walking with Felton and asked for a match. He had appeared to be half drunk and looking for trouble, so Felton had said he had # no matches and walked on with witness. Flaw had then used some bad language and Felton asked “Was that meant for me?” Flaw had replied that it was and struck Felton. Felton urged that Flaw had started the trouble. Flaw had nothing to say. The three accused were each fined £1 and ordered to pay witnesses’ expenses, £l, between them.
