CONFERENCE CONCLUDES ELECTION OF OFFICERS The next conference of the Libraries. Association will take place in March a year lienee, a decision to this effect being made at the annual meeting last evening. The retiring president, Aliss E. Melville, was in the chair. The conference, which has just concluded a two days’ session in Auckland, has heard several instructive papers, business being wound up with the election of officers. It was decided to urge the Government to give favourable consideration to the question of increasing the free grant to libraries to permit of the subsidy being made available to libraries in boroughs where the population did not exceed 3,000, instead of tho present population of 1,500. it was also decided to approach the Government with a view to obtaining free copies of Government publications for libraries where the librarians gave their services voluntarily, and also to ask the Government to reinstate its subsidy with a view to helping libraries to purchase books *of educational value. The question of a proposed Imperial librarians’ conference, the first to be held in New Zealand, which was raised at an earlier session by Miss Melville, was referred to the incoming executive*. The following officers were elected: President, Mr. G. Benstead (Timaru); vice-presidents, Misses E. Melville (Auckland) and E. A. Chaplin (Christchurch). Messrs. A. C. Ford (Invercargill). T. C. A. Hislop (AVellington). G. P. Brown (Wanganui), AV. C. Levs (Leys Institute). J. J. Clark (Dunedin) and G. 11. Dolby (New Plymouth): executive committee, Misses M. BlaCkett and E. Culverwell, and Messrs. J. C. Anderson. J. Barr, E. J. Bell. E B. Ellerm, It. B. Farnall. AV. B. MeEwan and Dr. G. Scholefield: honorary secretary and treasurer. Air. J. Norrie; auditor, Air. B. O. Peterson.
