RANGITIKEI CUP VICTOR DOBBIN’S SPRINT SUCCESS Special to THE SI. V WANGANUI, Wednesday. The Rangitikei Racing Club’s annual meeting opened at Bulls today in glorious weather. Tne track was rather hard and fast, providing, however, excellent autumn conditions. The attendance was quite good, and the totalisator turnover, £13.147, against £13,521 on the opening day last year. Balloon won the Rangitikei Cup by the narrowest margin, and Wiggins, the rider of the Gasbag gelding, was again seen in /good form when he steered Dobbin to victory in the Scott .Memorial. There were several exciting finishes. After Soviet fell in the early stages of the Ngatiapa Hack Handicap, an inquiry was held, and as a result Rider N. Voitre was suspended for the remainder of the meeting for careless riding, in allowing his mount to get on the heels of another horse. The Hurdles All started in the opening event, the Ohakea Hack. Hurdles, support being accorded Whenuanui £327, Four Aces £244 and Royal Acre £23S. Four Aces, Figry Comet, Whcnuatonga and Whenuanui were in the van racing fur the first hurdle, but once over Whenualonga went into the lead, being followed down the straight by Whenuanui. Four Aces, Fiery Comet, Copey, Royal Acre and Red Lane. Racing .for the back stretch Whenuanui, .who had made a bad jump at the stand fence, went out in front of Four Aces. Whcnuatonga, Royal Acre, Red Lane and Copey. The leader increased his margin to half a. dozen lengths as .they crossed the top, being followed by Four Aces, Royal Acre, Red Lane and Fiery Comet. Royal Acre followed Whenuanui into the straight and over the last fence, the favourite was not troubled to win, pulling up by four lengths, with Royal Acre half a length ahead of Kowhatu. After a gap came Four Aces and Red Lane together, ahead of Fiery Comet and First Ruler. Trial Plate Leisure was the elect of backers for the Trial Plate, carrying £357, compared with £2G9 on Kali and £176 on Lady Lucerne. The favourite was first to show out from Kali and Golden Flower, and when they had settled down Leisure was showing the way to Golden Flower, Pont D’Or, Kali, Platina and Lady Lucerne. On the turn for home Golden Flower had headed Leisure for a moment, the pair being well clear of Kali, Pont D’Or, and Spearform, but over the final stages Leisure came again, to win by half a length from Golden Flower, with Kali a length away. Spearform was fourth, only a head in front of Pont D’Or, with Platina, Robbie's Mistake and Kosher next. At the five furlongs Soviet got on the heels of another runner and came down. Crossing the top Tentcall, Airforce, Monoloff, Patearoa, Merrv Melody and Myola was the order, with Latakia making a forward move. As they swung into the horpe stretch Tentcall. Airforce, Patearoa, Monoloff and Merry Melody were bunched, with Latakia coming fast on the outer. The favourite continued his run over the final stages, and just managed to get up in the last stride to snatch victory by a short head from Tentcall. Two lengths away was Airforce, while close up were Patearoa. Merry Melody and Monoloff together, with Myola next. Scott Memorial
