LERMOND AND GOLDING AT WANGANUI AMERICAN BEATEN Press Association WANGANUI. Today. Keen interest was shown at Wanganui in the Taranaki Centre of the Amateur Athletic Association’s sports Yieeting last evening, when Georg* Golding (.Australia) and Leo Lermond (America) competed. Golding won his event, the 440yds. race, in beautiful style. from M. S the I,oooyds., but going round the back the last time D. Evans, who was handy made a sudden spurt to the leading position, and maintained this to win. The time. 2m 18s. is near the New Zealand record Results: 4-4.0 Yds. Invitation Handicap.—G. Golding (Australia), scr.. 1: M. Strange (Palmerston North), 10yds.. 2. The other starters were: G. Irving (Hawere). at 12yds, and M. Darby (Wanganui) at lSyds. Golding showed beautiful action in a long stride, which soon caught up with the rest of the field, and half-way round he had assumed the lead. Entering the straight the Australian with a comfortable margin to spare, slowed up. but Strange came up fast and only a couple of yards separated the placed men. Time. 50s. I.oooYds. Invitation Race.—Don Evans (Taihape), 1; Leo Lermond (United States). 2. J. Pawson and R. H McDonald also competed, being conceded 30yds. each. Passing the stand McDonald led with Pawson following, while farther back Lermond led Evans. The position was unaltered when the final lap was entered on. In going round the back the surprising thing happened. Pawson and McDonald dropped out, and suddenly Evans shot to the front. Seemingly Lermond was taken by surprise. He put in a strong challenge, but was stalled off, Evans winning amid ar outburst of enthusiasm. Time, 2m 18&.
