NEW ELECTRICAL SCHEME
POWER FROM SOUTHERN LAKES I-j'om Our Own Correspondent INVERCARGILL, Today. I’lans suggested some time ago to establish a hydro-electric works in the Sounds district for the extraction of nitrogen from the air were advanced when a party of surveyors under Mr H. P. Gibbs, of New York, left on Monday by the Hinemoa for Deep Cove Doubtful Sound. Before leaving, Mr. Gibb said that the American Cyanide Company, which had an associated company in England, had received from the New Zealand bounds Hydro-Electric Company an option for the purchase of its concession granted on January 12. 1926. This concession provided for the development of hydro-electric power to the amount of 250.000 horse-power, using the waters of Lakes Manapouri and Te Anau by means of a tunnel miles long, terminating in pipe lines at Deep Love, Doubtful Sound. Here the generating power could be installed, together with works to utilise the power, the products contemplated were electro-chemical, and their manufacture -would involve the extraction of mtrogen from the atmosphere. at IS alread - v spent some time at Lake Manapouri, and will now carry out survey and exploration work between Deep Cove and the Lakes.
