FLOODLIGHT CYCLING
WESTERN SPRINGS CARNIVAL A. programme of seventeen events will be run off by the Manukau Amateur Cycling Club at the fast concrete banked track at the Western Springs Stadium this evening. The first event will commence at 7.45 p.m. and the programme has been so arranged that no delay will be occasioned. The last event is scheduled to start at 9.30 p.m. and as this race is the big event of the evening, the five-miles scratch race, the programme should conclude at 9.45 p.m. The principal attractions will naturally be the two motor-paced events. This phase of the sport has made such an immediate appeal to the public of Auckland that the inclusion of such an event on the new track is a necessity. Conditions permitting, Angus Mackie, who won both motor-paced races at last week’s championship meeting. wilL make an attempt to reduce Hubert Opperman’s mile record of 1.21. Mackie, during his training operations, has been lapping in the vicinity of 23sec and is therefore quite confident of succeeding. Mackie is the most accomplished p rformer behind motor-pace among the amateur riders of the Dominion. The match race between the two Auckland amateurs, H. K. Dwight and L. C. Aldred should be a close contest. Both riders made their first public appearance last week. Two special Har-ley-Davidson motor-cycles have been loaned to the club by Messrs. _ Morson Bros, and tin- contestants will start on equal terms from a flying start.
