RIDER i i COLEMAN SELECTED DIFFICULTIES TO BE FACED : The selection by the Auto Cycle j Union of Percy Coleman to make the trip to England to take part in the j Tourist Trophy race at the Isle of Man ; in June does not come as a surprise to motor-cycling circles in Auckland. Coleman will leave by the Remnera on April 1. The English A.C.U. will | pay his fare to the» Isle of Man and back, and he will be expected to make his own arrangements for accommodation during the weeks of practice. It had been the intention of the A.C.U. here to hold a series of elimination contests between the best riders of the Dominion, but this was dropped through no suitable course - being available. A race ou the speedway at Mangerc, as suggested, would have been no Indication of a rider's skill on such a course as the specially prepared tar macadam road of the Isle of Man with its turns, bridges and jumps. Many track champions are mere novices when it comes to fast road work. Other New Zealanders have competed in the T.T. races. In 1927 Moller went well until he unfortunately fell, and last year Alby Lemon represented the A.J.S. Company. His team mate secured second place. Success in riding in this event depends to a great extent on knowing every yard of the course, and this can come only through weeks of training. - - -
Speedway Siftings NO. 3.—THAT THIRD LAP The rider was certainly going very fast. Do you remember the way lie took that first corner and slid round in a shower of cinders to the beginning of the back straight, where be shot off at once at full speed. He rode the grhss all the way round, too. Are you sure that time is right? This is the plaint of many speedway enthusiasts after their particular champion has failed in ' his attempt on the four-lap record. A glance at the times for each lap will give its own explanation. The first circuit was covered in excellent time, and so was the second, although it certainly was three-fifths of a second slower. Then the fatal third lap. ' when the first dash had worn off and the final spurt had not begun, sbows where the attempt failed. Prove this for yourself when next at the speedway. MEETING INDEFINITE NORTH SHORE CLUB’S RACES The date of the -North Shore MotorCycle Club’s championship race meeting is now indefinite, as Orewa Beach will not be available on March 16. The Waitemata County Council, which has control of this stretch, has refused to grant permission for a Sunday meeting, and as the beach is too far from the City to allow a programme to be run off on a Saturday afternoon, the meeting will probably be held elsewhere. Among others, Henning’s speedway at Mangere has been suggested. This will come as a disappointment to the competitors, who have always looked forward to these meetings, which also provide a pleasant outing. The surface at Orewa, too, was ideal for fast work.
POPULAR MISS TAYLOUR MAY RETURN TO AUCKLAND Prospects are bright for the return to Auckland of the champion cindertrack woman rider, Miss Fay Taylour, whose exhibitions of broadsiding were applauded by record audiences on both occasions on which she appeared at Western Springs. Miss Taylour liked the track here so well on the final night that she expressed the wish that she might be able to remain in Auckland for the remainder of the season, hut this her contracts would not permit. She was to have returned to Australia within the next few days, but arrangements are on foot lor her to appear again here. The date has been set tentatively as March 22. The cheer that went up when the announcer asked the other Saturday if Aucklanders would like to see her ride again was sufficient proof that she was by far the most popular visitor to ride at Western Springs. FLYING IN ANTARCTIC HUBERT WILKINS RETURNS Ihie famous Antarctic explorer, Sir liubert ilkins, has returned to Monte N ideo from the Antarctic. The explorer was forced to bring out his expedition earlier than anticipated owing to the unusual conditions of the ice pack this season Extensive exploration work has been done by use of air-craft. Hiving conditions in such extremely cold temperatures necessitate the use of the highest quality fuels for the airplane engines.
