Rangitikei Opens at Bulls Tomorrow

The Prospects Reviewed

The annual race meeting of the Rangitikei Racing Club is to be held at Bulls tomorrow and on Thursday. Fields for the opening day are fair, and in some cases there will be a scarcity of runners. Reports from the South indicate that the track will be. hard and fast. The principal event is the Rangitikei Cup, a race that lias been competed for annually for bo years. There are only eight left in, and the Fordelltrained Ruanui is left at the top of affairs with 5.12. This is a pretty solid impost for a horse that prefers a shorter journey than ten furlongs, but he is a fit horse. Paitonu has shown signs of returning to form, for he was second to Ruanui at Wanganui over eight and a-half furlongs last montfi; for this half-length defeat he is now’ allowed 41b. Dolomite is on the up grade, and his Marlborough Cup win recently Shows that he is coming along nicely. Marjoram will be at home, and his narrow defeat by My Own in the Dannevirke Cup will not be overlooked. Briar Root will stick it out, and so will Balloon, whose Dannevirke form was his best to date. Discourse will have a few friends, but it is probable that the stable will prefer Marjoram to its other representative, Opa. It looks as if the four top-weights and Balloon will be found running prominently. A field of seven only is carded for the sprint, the Scott Memorial, and here agais it is more than likely that those near the top will be dangerous, j Freehold, Acora, The Raider and Dob- ' bin may *be the pick. The Fordell stable holds a strong

Breeders to Blame I often wonder, says a Melbourne writer, how many good racehorses are ruined every year before they ever see a. racecourse through being sel * z into the ring looking like prize cattle at a show. They are broken down by their trainers in the process of ridding them of the fat put on tlieni in a few weeks prior to the sale. The breeders lay the blame at the feet ot the trainers, but the damage has often been done long before the trainers have had anything to do with the youngsters. Mr. S. O. Wood, who recently returned from a holiday in New Zealand, says the New Zealanders do not fatten their yearlings for the sales as we do here, but are content to send them into the ring in nice healthy condition, and in comparison with ours movelor less in the rough.
