RICCARTON GOSSIP
PROGRAMME FOR NIGHTMARCH Special to THE SUN CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. In the spring New Zealand performers in Sydney and Melbourne more than held their own, and though some critics hold the belief that the Dominion is the better country for breeding purposes than Australia, it Is an established fact that the oats grown in this country help to thoroughly mature our gallopers. Thus it is not surprising that trainers prefer New Zealand oats. Yesterday Eric Connolly cabled A. McAulay to take to Sydney sufficient oats for the Melbourne trainers’ team till after the conclusion of the Sydney Cup carnival. The famous Sydney brood mare, Valicare, arrived at Christchurch yesterday from Sydney with a foal at foot by Magpie. She was sent on to tbe Hororata stud, where she will remair till the spring, after which she will b* mated with Night Raid. Her Magpi* foal will be reared at Hororata by the well-known stud master, Mr. H. M. Reeves. Since the Riccarton racecourse bowling club was formed the club has made marked progress, and already it can boast of some good players. Trainers and 'jockeys are taking a keec interest in the game. The Canterbury Jockey Club certainly made a good move when it decided, to provide those connected with the Turf with a spor". that appeals to many, and the Jockey Club is to be commended on its late* move. Mr. George Gould, one of the keenest members of the C.J.C.. is now eating that tennis courts be laid *• Riccarton, and it is very likely tb*j during the winter months a start be made. . Marsham pulled up lame after ing at Riccarton this week, and it/; very unlikely that he will contest v* Peninsula Cup on Saturday.
