RELAY RACING

IN YACHTING NOW Relay races are exceedingly popular in these days of athletic contest, but such races are usually confined to sports programmes. Yachting circles in Wellington, however, have gone one better and recently held a relay race for yachts. Five teams were entered for the event, each comprising one first-class and one second-class boat. The race was quite interesting to watch, and was done over four stretches. The second-class yacht did the first distance, transferring her flag to the first-class boat, who in turn retransferred it back to the second-class competitor, the first-class yacht completing the final distance. The Kotuku II and Arahiwi, first and second-class respectively, won the race with a comfortable margin, but it was not the victory that counted, but the fact that a new style of yachtracing had been discovered, and it seems likely that very few regatta programmes in the future will be without a relay race, certainly so far as Wellington is concerned.
