GOOD SECOND DAY

Bigger Attendance At Show CARNIVAL ATMOSPHERE rR lowing of cattle and the continual hum of machinery running on numerous stands gave a real show atmosphere to the second day of the Auckland Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s Metropolitan Show at Epsom today. Weather conditions were again ideal, and it was a largely-increased attendance that followed proceedings in the main arena, where the competitions were held. At first country people predominated, but as the day wore on townspeople, attracted by the riding competitions and jumping events, commenced to put in an appearance, considerably swelling the attendance. Although the biggest attraction for the general public will be the concluding day tomorrow, the show this afternoon had already gained the lively atmosphere usually associated with People’s Day.

The principal attractions in the judging rings today were draught horses, children’s ponies and fat sheep and lambs. Poultry and pigeons were also judged, and the dog show, which opened this morning, also attracted a large measure of support. Although ihe perfection of mechanical devices is gradually ousting the horse in favour of petrol and oil, draught horses are still in good demand in many parts of the North where rough conditions still find the horse superior to the tractor. .The entries today, although not very numerous, were of a good standard, many useful sorts, such as give good service in either plough or spring cart, being paraded in the ring. Hood quality was also seen in the saddle horse section. Yesterday afternoon the judges commented upon the excellent quality of the animals brought before them, special reference being made to Miss Thelma Morrin’s Absent, which won the North Island Championship. There was another fine showing this morning, particularly in the pony section, which was well patronised by juvenile exhibitors. The competitions again proved an interesting feature —saddling races, potato races on horseback, musical chairs, banting and donkey races for children. Ths main list of show awards appears en page 10. , THE CHAMPIONS f NORTH ISLAND AWARDS North Island championship awards made yesterday and today in cattle, sheep, pigs and horses are as follow: CATTLE Milking?
