TROTTING

By

"ABAYDOS"

OTAHUHU FINAL DAY AMONG THE DIVIDEND PAYERS HO?/ THEY PERFORMED Form was well borne out on the second day of the Otahuhu Trotting Club’s summer carnival, but nevertheless several winners—who were worthy of solid support—were allowed to pay remunerative prices. • Paradigm, The Abbey and Machine Gun provided their backers with a surprise figure. Except for ono bad break, in which h© did not lose much ground. Paradigm trotted a sound race in the Suburban Handicap. Owner Benjamin drove him with confidence and away he came over the final pinch to knock a tick over 10 seconds off his handicap. Rangitero again found the -two-mile journey rather beyond his powers of endurance. He was well in the picture at a mile and five furlongs, but after that he went to a bad break. AY. Hughes made a dying effort in the straight, but could make no impression on the winner. * * * J. T. Paul got Benefice away nicely in the Newmarket Handicap and she way well placed for a mile. Then she hit the front and stayed there to win all out by little more than a length. The mare registered 3.24 3-5 off a 3.30 mark. * * * Honest little Nella Dillon again went her consistent race and she put in a great challenge to Benefice in the run to the box. F. J. Smith gave her every assistance, but Nella had to be content with second place when the judge was passed. F. G. Holmes succeeded in keeping Laplander well in to the rails in thesaddle heat, and he duly won with comfort. Fie hit the front crossing the top and was never afterwards troubled. * * * Te Wahia again went a solid race with the weight on top and at the turn for home had everything beaten except Laplander. The first day winner could make no impression on the leader, but he gained second place and just about saved Ills backers. * * AThe Abbey began well in the Dominion Handicap and W. Clifton always had him going in a handy position. He was fourth to turn for home, but putting in a great dash over the final furlong won nicely at the finish. Sunshower went soundly all the way in the big race, and when heads were turned for home she looked a winner. R. Berry on the inner, was forced to come out in the run home and finished fast to get second place.

Akenehi began brightly in the Alexandra Handicap, and when the stand was reached had collared the lead from Gold Sovereign. The grey mare sailed along comfortably in front, but approaching the home turn broke badly, but with the advantage of a good lead settled down to win comfortably. * * * Gold Sovereign again trotted solidly and he paid a nice price for second place. He was unlucky to strike the improved Akenehi in such a race and under ordinary circumstances he would probably have been returned a winner. * * * J. T. Paul lost no time in getting Reremai into a good position in the Richmond Handicap and with a lap to go the mare had- taken the lead. Making no mistakes the Mangerc mare was never troubled to win in good style, registering the fast time of 4.26 2-5. a fraction outside New Zealand Cup qualification. * * * Florent, while not too well placed in the early stages of the Richmond Handicap, was showing up with half the distance covered. He made a forward move at. the three furlongs post and was handy at the entrance to the straight, but was hard pressed to head Stoney off second place. Machine Gun unwound a wonderful burst of speed over the last three furlongs of the Coates'handicap to come home ori His lonesome with some of the best speed merchants in the Dominion behind him. A. McMillan and his fine pacer were given a splendid reception on returning to the enclosure. The one-time Auckland idol, Jewel Pointer, showed an appreciable return to form when he came along at the end of tho fast 10-furlong heat to gain second place. While many of his former admirers did not participate in the useful price paid, they were gratified to see A. Julian’s perseverance being at last rewarded. * * * Beginning in her best style .in the Farewell Handicap, the brilliant four-year-old Belle Axworthy soon made her army of backers feel that their investments were as safe as any bank. When “Tarter” said hurry, the mare cleared out from the opposition to win >n handsome fashion. * * * Warplane gave one of his best displays in the Farewell Handicap and the surprise about it was the Jong odds obtained by liis supporters. J. Shaw got the black gelding to hop away correctly, and he paced steadily throughout, to put in a game effort in the straight which carried him into second berth as the post was reached.
