Billion Scores in Good Race

KAIHORO’S IMPROVEMENT THE DANNEVIRKE MEETING Special to THE SUS DANNEVIRKE, Thursday. The second day of the Dannevirke Cup meeting was concluded today in fine weather and there was a good attendance. The totalisator handled £13,977, making £25,95S for the meeting. an increase of £2,594 compared with the corresponding meeting last year.

The High-Weight Motliplane was preferred to Pale Star and Tunbridge, but the alteration in the weights failed to alter the first day’s result. Pale Star, Grand National and Tunbridge were in line passing through the straight, with Whakane, Mothplane and Revel in behind, but before reaching the back Tunbridge had taken command. Pale Star was on terms with Tunbridge when heads were straightened out. Mothplane made a bid to get up. but had no chance with the leaders. Tunbridge finished too strongly for Pale Star, there being a margin of two lengths between them, with Motliplane three lengths farther away. Whakane was fourth, and Grand National, Revel and Kaokaoroa next. Novice Stakes Spearform was preferred to Acreline. Win Acre was the early leader from Moatoa, Agrestic, Acreline and Corneroff, Emerald Abbey having been the slowest to move. There was practically no change among the leading division across the top and to the straight, where Agrestic and Win Acre ran V'ide, enabling Acreline to get through on the rails. The field was spread across the course and Acreline drew away to win by two lengths from the big outsider, Corneroff, who was wide out. with Win Acre another length away. There was little between the next pair, Royal Mission and Kosher. Hartgill Handicap Six horses went out to contest the Hartgill Handicap, Mountain Heath being preferred to Bonogne and Balloon. From a walk-up start Stanchion forged to the front from Billion, Mountain Heath and Bonogne, the runners being well bunched. At the five-furlong post Mountain Heath moved into second berth and a furlong later got up inside Stanchion, on the rails. Billion joined in crossing the top, but was required to run on the outside of the trio. Turning for home Bonogne came through on the inside. A great race from the distance saw Balloon come on, but Billion responded to get the verdict by a nose, with Stanchion a head back and a neck in front of Bonogne. Mountain Heath was fifth, with Chopin the whipper-in. Tapuata Hack The first day’s winner, Belle Star, was made a warm order for the Tapuata Handicap. Quinola and Golden Shadow were the leaders from the barrier rise, Belle Star and Cloyne being next. As they turned into the straight Belle Star in behind came on the outside, but in the run home the favourite could not overtake the outsider, Golden Shadow, who won comfortably by two lengths, with Quinola half a length back. Keen was fourth with W erata and Cloyne next. Kaitoke Juvenile The public selected Hawkshaiv as their favourite for the Kaitoke Juvenile, although there was good sunport for Henry of Xavarre. Hawkshaw began smartly to lead Souclion; Lady Ronald, Benign and Manuiri: C rossing the top Souchong ran to the front, while approaching the straight J ason_ moved forward and the pair were in front of Henry .of Xavarre and Hawkshaw. Souchong retired at the distance and in a good finish Henry of Xavarre got home by a neck from Jason, with Hawkshaw another neck away. Fitz Quex came verv fast to take fourth place a head away. Glengarry Handicap In the Glengarry Handicap the field, with the exception of Huikai, left inline. Kaihoro opened up a gap quickly and was still in the van from Dobbin. Ridgemount, Cuticle, and Veronese at the home turn. Kaihoro, hard ridden, squeezed home from Dobbin by
