COAST STEAMER LAID UP
DISPUTE OVER QUARTERS Press Association WELLINGTON. Today. The coastal boat Himitangi has been laid up for a week and 16 men are out of employment because of a dispute about the messroom. It is stated that the new messroom was built forward for the men. but they preferred to keep their messroom aft. The new messroom provided temporary sleeping accommodation for the third engineer, but the Marine Engineers’ Institute raised an objection and insisted that he be quartered aft, as is invariably done aboard ship. An agreement was reached that the men should take up room forward, the suggestion being, it is said, favourably received by men concerned, but the Seamen’s Union then stepped in and vetoed the proposal.
