CANINE EXCELLENCE

dogs on parade at EPSOM CLUB’S SUCCESSFUL SHOW plump and cheerful dogs, despondent dogs and favoured dogs with svelte figures and slinky eyes, are mingled today in a mushroom c ity for canines. Through the avenues of Dogdom, the village tucked away in a corner of the Epsom Showgrounds, grim-visaged Experts are wandering, here pausing to enthuse over the muscular development of an unconcerned Alsation, there staying to debate on the somewhat heavy lower jaw of a somnolent bulli* an animated business, a dog show. There is much grooming of animals of many breeds, strict attention t 0 dieting (for apparently the regulations demand limits in poundage), and perhaps a reprimand from an agitated mistress to a Pekingese which has not employed the correct deportment in the parade before the critical gaze of a judge. And the parade ... a crucial test &ay owners, judges, and spectators. Tho excitable pacing of whippets, the leisurely progress of setters, the prancing of Pomeranians—diverse b*- € eds were being judged at the same moment, in the colour of a green sward and a summer crowd this morning. INTERESTING PAGEANT An interesting pageant of canino life, engrossing particularly for -those not too well versed in the art of producing standard types of dogs in the ceaseless movement of the crowd before the lines of cages. Here the dispassionate features ot' a solitary French bulldog ranked with the sleek\ expression of a collie; nearby, the limpid depths of a spaniel’s eyes did not reveal a sign of lecognition in spite of the obvious attempts by a perky terrier to become acquainted. This, the 3Sth annual show of the Auckland Kennel Club, is a successful affair for the organisation. Entries are extremely satisfactory, particularly in fc#avy and sporting breeds. Alsations, especially, have secured large representation and bulldogs, too, by the apparent improvement, are now earning vider popularity. Mr. D. D. Wilson, one of the judges was impressed by the betterment In the standard of the benched animals, especially the bulldogs. “The standard is infinitely better than it has been, in my experience, for 18 years,’* Mr. Wilson remarked. The efforts of breeders to attain greater quality are gratifying, and the General standard must be ranked as Highly satisfactory.’* The judges were:—Messrs. E. T. jlowell, terriers, excepting toys; 1). T. Sinclair, sporting breeds; N. Wade, president of the club, Alsatians; H. A. Craig, collies: Barlow Wills, toy dogs; utd I>. L). Wilson, bulldogs and all other breeds.
