DASH FOR THE SOUTH

CAR THIEVES ARRESTED AT NGARUAWAHIA TWO FOR SENTENCE Arrested at Ngaruawahia after driving from Auckland in a stolen motor-car, Francis William Henry Jeeves and Francis Edward Pinker appeared at the Police Court this morning and admitted the theft of the car which they had driven away. They were committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Jeeves and Pinker, two young men, were charged, before Messrs. D. Donaldson and S. B. Bull, J.P.’s, with breaking and entering a garage at 195 Remuera Road and stealing a car valued at £350 and belonging to William Ross, on February 8. Chief-Detective Hammond withdrew a charge of car conversion which had previously been made against accused.

Miss Ross said the garage on her father’s property stood back from the road. On the night of the theft the gate was left open. Witness’s father owned a car valued at £670, which had been placed in the garage about 6 p.m. on February 8. On the following morning it was discovered that the doors of the garage had been forced and the car was missing. Both accused were strangers to witness. According to William Ross, owner of the car, the garage had two large folding doors, both of which had been locked. “On February 9 I received information from the police that prompted me to go to Ngaruawahi, where I found the car in the grounds of the police station,” witness added. “The car was undamaged, but the benzine was used.” Constable Carran, of Ngaruawahia. said he had arrested the two accused at Ngaruawahia on February 9. That had been on another charge. At the police station Pinker had said they had travelled from Auckland in a car taken from Remuera Road. The car was said to be near the river at Ngaruawahia, where witness had found it. Jeeves had supported Pinker’s statement, adding that he had driven the car from Auckland to Paeroa. The car was claimed by the witness Ross on the same day. Accused, who had nothing to say, pleaded guilty and were committed for sentence.
