LOSSES ON FRUIT
AUCKLAND GROWERS’ PLIGHT A BAD SEASON Heavy losses have been registered by Auckland orchardists this season. Many thousands of cases of stone fruit have been wasted. The wet weather of tho past three months has been decidedly unfavourable to the growing of stone fruit. The season opened badly with the rain, ruining a big portion of the strawberry crop. A wet spell in the present month came just when the peach and plum season was at its height, and thousands of cases of fruit were ruined. The hot weather coming just afte.r the rain accentuated the position, and fruit fell from the trees to the ground in all stages of maturity. At the moment there is still a fair amount of stone fruit coming forward to the marts, but even this, particularly peaches, shows the effect of the weather, and is of a very mixed quality. The lot of the applegrower has been a happier one. and indications now are that the.re will be a heavy surplus for export this season. Some of the earlier varieties have already come forward for grading prior to export, but the main harvest is not expected to start until next month.
