N.Z. SCULLING TITLE

MASON AND HADFIELD TRAINING HARD EXCITEMENT AT HOKIANGA From Our Oicu Correspondent KOHUKOHU, Today. Indications point to a big attendance of spectators to witness the sculling championship race on the Hokianga River next Saturday between J. Mascn, the present holder of the New Zealand title, and D. Hadfield. ex-world champion. Roth men are in splendid form, and expect, if the conditions are favourable, to put up an Australian and New Zealand record. The bookings at the Hokianga hotels are exceptionally large. Each competitor is very confident. Mason has made wonderful headway since his last race with Hannan, and Madfield says he is as fit as when he won on the Thames in England. No event in the north has created so much interest, and the river route is daily lined with spectators watching the competitors out for training spins. Both men are working in earnest. Large meetings of Maoris have been held in the different pas at Hokianga. making arrangements for a monster hui and war dance to celebrate the occasion. Hundreds of natives will be present, as they loo4v upon the event as commemorating the landing of their forefathers on the Hokianga.
