BUSINESS MAN’S DEATH
MR. ARCHIBALD KENT LOSS TO NEWMARKET One of Newmarket’s most prominent business men and one who took keen interest in the affairs of the borough, died yesterday. He was Mr. Archibald Kent. managing-director of the bakery firm of George Kent and Sons, Limited. Mr. Kent, who was in his 59th year, has been ailing for the last four and a-half months. He died in a private hospital. Born in Newmarket, Mr. Kent had for many years been actively concerned

A son of the late Mr. George Kent, founder of the firm, he engaged in its activities as a young man, and it is to his sound commercial knowledge and business acumen that the firm owes much of its progress. He was for several years president of the Auckland Master Bakers’ Association. Mr. Kent was a member of the Newmarket Borough Council for the last 11 years and he had topped the poll at successive elections. As chairman of the streets committee his administrative ability had been proven in the successful manner in which several important schemes were carried out. Kor two years he was chairman of the legal and finance committee. As the first president and the moving spirit throughout of the Newmarket Business Promotion Society, he demonstrated his great enthusiasm for the business growth of the borough and its development as an important shopping centre.
Mr. Kent is survived by Mrs. Kent, a son, Mr. G. A. Kent, and two daughters. His brother, Mr. Henry Kent, is a director of the company. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon, the interment being at the Warikar&ka Cemetery.
