ROLLED CAR OFF TRACKS
IMPATIENT ELEPHANT USED ITS WEIGHT ACCIDENT AT KARANGAHAKE Swaying back and forward In his truck, an elephant succeeded m derailing the wagon at Karangahake at 2.15 o’clock this morning. The train was delayed four hours. The elephant, which belongs to Wirth’s Circus, was being carried on the circus special from Tauranga to Te Aroha last night. Impatient at being cooped up, the beast began to sway gently from side to side, graduually increasing its roll as its impatience grew. Just after leaving Karangahake station and before entering the tunnel, the inevitable happened. The truck left the rails, bringing the whole train to a standstill.
The wagon, which is specially built for the carriage of elephants, did not turn over, fortunately for Jumbo, but it took a relief gang four hours to replace the truck on the rails. No damage was done. Then the journey was continued. But Jumbo was quieter. One severe fright in a night was enough for any self-respecting elephant.
