PETROL TAX SYSTEM
GRANTS TO AUSTRALIAN STATES Reed. 9.30 a.m. CANBERRA, Today. The Premiers’ Conference decided to cancel, as from June next, the Federal grant in aid of roads in favour of a new arrangement under which the Commonwealth will distribute among the States the equivalent of 2Jd a gallon derived from the petrol tax. The sum of £2,000,000 accruing thus to the States must be used for the construction and maintenance of roads. The suggestion that petrol duties should be increased was held over, Federal representatives pointing out certain difficulties in the way of this.
