BIG LOSS TO CHARITIES

ANTI-GAMBLERS CURTAIL DERBY SWEEP NEW LIMITATION FIXED Reed. 10.30 a.m. LONDON, Friday. Rumours have been current for some time that, owing to the possibility of police action under pressure from anti-gamblers, the Stock Exchange Derby sweep will be abandoned. It is now announced that the “mutual subscription fund,” as it is officially called, will be limited to £IOO,OOO, of which 10 per cent, will be distributed to charities. Last year the fund reached £1,000,000, charities receiving £IOO,OOO. The limitation means that needy hospitals and other beneficiaries will lose £90,000.
