EXCAVATING HAURAKI PLAINS CANALS

POCKET TYPE PLANT

Intended for use on Hauraki Plains drainage work, a special type of pocket-dredge, designed for one-man control and maximum output, was unloaded <Lt' Auckland from the Otaki yesterday. The dredge has been purchased by the Land Drainage Department and will be shipped Keripeehi, which is included in the Hauraki drainage job. The plant, which will be equipped for use as a dragline dredge, is powered by a .four-cylinder engine, and Is a tractor-excavator type—that is, it can move along the banks of the canals under its own power, using “crawlers” or caterpillar drive. Each _ “crawler” Is 14in wide by 10ft 6in long, and a speed of four miles an hour can be attained in average country. The bucket dipper has a capacity of threeeighths of a cubic yard. The beam has a reach of 25ft.
