BETTER RAIL TRANSPORT
FRUITGROWERS’ NEEDS Better facilities for the handling of fruit by rail will be provided shortly by the Railway Department, according to a report presented at a meeting of the Management Committee of the Auckland Provincial Fruitgrowers’ Council yesterday. The secretary, Mr. G. A. Green, said it was hoped to have refrigerating vans included on various trains. The date of the forthcoming Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s show is unsuitable for the display of fruit, being too early for late fruit and too late for soft fruits. A committee was appointed to meet the show officials and ask that in future the growers be consulted when dates are being fixed for displays. Research is still being conducted at the Cawthron Institute into the means of dealing with the bronze beetle, which does extensive damage every year. A report stated that hopes are high that the problem will soon be solved.
Support for the Urban Rating Bill, which is to be redrafted this session, was expressed in a resolution.
