£250,000 LESS

BRIGHTER PROSPECT FOR HARBOUR BRIDGE SUCCESSFUL BORINGS “The chances of getting the Harbour Bridge built are 100 per cent, brighter now than they were 12 months ago. The 13 borings on the Fanshawe Street-Northcote Point gave an average depth of 54ft to rock, the deepest being 94ft. This has demonstrated that the bridge could be built for £250,000 less than estimated, and thoroughly justifies the advice of the Bridge Association’s engineers.” So said Mr. A. H. Greville, chairman of the Harbour Bridge Association yesterday morning. The association has confidential Information that the Harbour Transit Facilities Commission will not sit again In Auckland. “The Government will have to do something for Auckland now that the Morningside tunnel scheme has been dropped," remarked Mr. Greville, who also stated that the suggestion of the City Engineer for a street to connect Ponsonby with the Fanshawe Street terminal of the bridge was not essential.
