NO CRUELTY INTENDED
STEER-RIDING CONTESTS NEXT WEEK’S A. AND P. SHOW Assurances that there would be no cruelty to any of the animals in the show were given at a meeting of the Auckland Agricultural and Pastoral Association yesterday afternoon, when a letter was received from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals regarding the proposals to stage buck-jumping and steer-riding competitions. The society hoped that no such devices as flank ropes would be used on the buck-jumpers, and offered the services of the inspector. The association has been unable to secure any genuine “outlaw” hoYses and will not accept any likely to give poor displays. The steers themselves control the excitement in the steerriding contests. There is no intention to resort to artificial means of exciting the animals. The programme arranged for the association’s show, which is to be held on the Epsom Showgrounds on Thursday, Friday and Saturday of next week, will include wild donkey demonstrations, sheep-dog trials and ring competitions,as well as wood-chooping and sawing contests. Record entries have been received in all sections and the show will be the largest ever held in Auckland.
In addition to the stock classes, there will be exhibitions of needlework, home industries, fruit and vegetables, poultry, rabbits and dogs.
