AUCKLAND WINS OUT

TABUTEAU BROS. RETAIN CORNWELL CUP LADS SHOW FINE SAILING Press Association DUNEDIN, Thursday. The Auckland crew, E. and R. Tabuteau, easily won the fourth race of the Cornwell Cup series, sailed here today. Having secured their third win, the boys have retained the cup for Auckland. No. 3 race, sailed in the morning, went to Wellington. The lads sailed an excellent race and fully deserved their win. The wind was fluky, but good manoeuvring by the boys from Port Nicholson kept them in the lead, non© of the other boats troubling them seriously. Otago sailed a very good, race, the boys having profited by their experience. In the fourth race the Auckland lads exhibited seamanship which was delightful to watch. They were on top of their form in the fresh breeze prevailing. FINAL RACE DESCRIBED At the gun Manukau led the fleet away, Auckland lying in a handy position to windward in second place. Then came Otago, Lyttelton, Christchurch and Wellington, in close formation. After a few minutes’ sailing Auckland took the lead and, in the thresh down the channel, steadily improved its position. Manukau, sailing well, kept second place, and although outclassed by Auckland showed a clean pair of heels to the remaining portion of the fleet. In the run down to the Vauxhall buoy Auckland, splendidly handled by her skipper, showed a great turn of speed and soon left the remainder of th© fleet far astern. Manukau followed fast in th© wake of the leader, but the others all experienced trouble with spinnakers. Otago lost its spinnaker completely and had to finish the run without its aid. In th© lead to the Kitchener Street mark Auckland left the remainder of th© fleet further astern. Rounding the boat harbour mark Manukau was nearly five minutes behind Auckland, while Lyttelton, Wellington and Christchurch followed at intervals of about half a minute. Otago retired. After rounding the boat harbour mark Wellington lost its spinnaker. This took place three time's, and finally Wellington withdrew altogether, Auckland sailing home a winner by nearly six minutes. The order was:—Auckland, Lyttelton, Manukau, Christchurch. THE MORNING RACE The morning race was sailed over a windward and leeward course. Auckland led the fleet: across the line by about a length, followed by Christchurch, Manukau, Otago, Wellington and Lyttelton, in that order. A few minutes after the start Auckland suddenly dropped astern of the and Wellington forged ahead to take up a strong position. On th© lead back to the boat harbour all the boats with the exception of Auckland broke out their spinnakers smartly, Auckland getting its spinnaker twisted. Wellington continued to move away from the others and, when the boat harbour mark was reached, had increased its lead on Lyttelton by one minute. Manukau, sailing well, was two seconds astern of Lyttelton. Wellington continued to walk away from the others and had gained over two minutes when the Kitchener Street mark was reached. Manukau passed Lyttelton near the Victoria Wharf and turned in second place, while Otago was behind Lyttelton. Auckland was half a minute further back, fifth, Christchurch coming up a long way astern. Ip the run to the finishing line Wellington further increased its lead, by four seconds. The finishing order was:—Wellington, Manukau. Lyttelton, Otago, Auckland, Christchurch.
