Civic Snapshots Notes from the Council Chamber

In answer to an application from an advertising -firm to have’ its request to erect hoardings in Anzac Avenue reconsidered, the City Council last evening agreed to amend a resolution, passed in 1926, prohibiting the. erection of hoardings in the avenue. Hoardings can now be erected on the south-western side, between Beach Road and Eden Street. The recommendation of the Finance Committee to establish an accident insurance fund on the basis of 100 per ohnt. on current premium rates w-as approved.

A request for a donation to the Plunket Society’s funds was referred to the Finance Committee.

No actiqn will be taken by the council in regard to a motion by Cr. Alice Basten for consideration of the division of the City into wards, on the motion of the Finance Committee. The question has been deferred for later consideration.

Mr. G. R. Hogan, head of the City traffic department, will represent the council at a meeting called by the Commissioner of Transport for Tuesday next to review the Motor Vehicles Regulations Act. The Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, and Cr. T. Bloodworth were appointed delegates to the Municipal Conference, which begins at Invercargill on March 5. The Town Clerk, Mr. J. S. Brigham, will accompany the delegation.

Cr. G. Grey Campbell asked that steps be taken to frame by-laws regulating the painting of advertisements on buildings.

A report from the Chief Traffic Inspector, Mr. G. R. Hogan, on the lessons in traffic questions given in the schools by Mr. Scholes, of the traffic department, was adopted. Mr. Hogan recommended consideration of the advisability of making the tuition a permanent work.

Having read that the Mayor of Wellington had proposed that a Dominion centenary celebration be held in the capital city in 1940, the Akarana Maori Association asked the council to move that the celebration be held here. “There's 10 years in which to act,” said the Mayor, in moving that the Finance Committee give the request consideration.
