WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MATAMATA BRANCH MEETS On Tuesday last a very successful afternoon was held in the garden of the Bank of New Zealand, Matamata, when the president, Airs. Ryan, presided over an attendance of nearly forty women. Aluch important business was dealt with, several new members elected, and a sub-committee arranged to draw up another hree months’ programme. Alesdames Flower and O’Hara were elecetd to the committee, and Airs. Ryan appointed to represent he institute at the coming March conference in Auckland. Airs. Wettenhall, Auckland organiser, was present, and gave general information. The meeting decided to join the Bay of Plenty Group as a means of furthering their interests and getting into touch with the work of other centres. Two very able demonstrations were given at the recent meetings; Airs. Clyffe Taylor showed some beautifully made baskets made from macramo string, carefully explaining the making, the materials required and the blending of the colours. Airs. Wettenhall showed how simply and inexpensively soft toys might be made from odd scraps of material. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Alesdames Lambourne, C. Johnston, Stevens and Schofield, and a pleasant afsernoon brought to a close by the singing of the National Anthem.
