APARTMENT HOUSE FIRE
OUTBREAK IN WELLINGTON RESCUE OF TWO CHILDREN Press Association WELLINGTON, Wednesday. A fire broke out late this afternoon in a 14-roomed, two-storeyed apartment house, situated in Nairn Street, about a mile from the centre of the city. The blaze, which was a spectacular one, resulted in the top storey being completely gutted. A crowd of over 2,000 people watched the fire from its middle stages, and the firemen had some difficulty in suppressing the outbreak. The building was a wooden one, occupied by Mrs. F. Fisher and owned by- Mr. T. B. Dwan. A sensational feature of the fire was the removal In the nick of time of two small children from the locked room in which the fire originated. Several people were in the house when the fire began, but it was a passer-by who first noticed anything amiss. The damage was considerable, and will run into several hundred pounds. The furniture was insured for £4OO.
