TRUST BETRAYED
PROBATION FOR YOUNG TRAVELLER THEFT OF GOODS Having taken goods from his employers and sold them to get money for a holiday at Rotorua, Ernest Keyvar pleaded guilty at the Police Court this morning to a charge of theft. He was admitted \ to probation for two years. Keyvar, a traveller, aged 20, was charged with stealing electrical goods valued at £l7 2s 6d from Gough, Gough and Hamer on December 18. Mr. Moody entered a plea of guilty for him. Counsel asked for leniency, urging accused’s youth. He was the son of respectable parents. Slackness in the running of the business had made it easy to steal the goods which had been taken away and sold. “It was a position of trust,” commented Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. “As to his age—did you know the difference between right and wrong at 20?” Mr. Moody: That’s different, and yet I wouldn’t like to say I did. The Magistrate: I did. Mr. Moody: But perhaps your Worship had a stronger mind. Chief-Detective Hammond put in that the young man had spent the money on a holiday at Rotorua. He had been earning £3 10s a week. “Do you mean to tell me he couldn’t live on that,” said the magistrate. Keyvar was admitted to probation for two years and ordered to make restitution. Mr. Moody's request for suppression of the name was refused. “You can try to square it up with the papers if you like,” the magistrate suggested. Mr. Moody: • I can’t do that, sir.
