GIANT LINERS PLANNED
GERMANY’S EUROPA NOW ON HER TRIALS BUILDING RACE BEGINS Reed. 9 a.m. LONDON, Thursday. The Europa, sister ship to the Bremen, has been rebuilt since last year’s disastrous fire, and is undergoing speed trials in the North Sea this week. It is claimed that the engine tests have already proved that she is several knots faster than the Bremen, whose record of four days 14J hours from New York to Cherbourg the Europa, is expected to attack on her first crossing on March 19. She carries a crew of nearly 1,000, and has accommodation for 2,200. The Europa will be followed by another monster, the Columbus, whose maiden trip is set down for May 23. The Germans claim that the trio will make the fastest weekly transatlantic service in history. Meanwhile there is a big effort afoot to challenge German supremacy. The Cunard Line is laying flbwn two liners of 65,000 and 70,000 tons respectively, while the White Star’s two new 27,000 ton motor vessels will be in service in April.
