MORRINSVILLE NOTES
The following contracts for roading' works were approved by the Piako County Council: Motumaoho-Tauhei Road, 3,200 cubic yards of earthwork, £428; Manga wara Road, 300 cubic yards of metalling, £600; No. 4 Road. 40 chains of metalling, £445. An oversize carcase of mutton, the dressed, weight of which was 1621 b, was on view at the Farmers’ Meat Company’s shop in Morrinsville on Saturday morning. The usual weight of a carcase is from 601 b to 701 b. The sheep was a four-tocth ewe from the farm of Mr. T. Inglis, Eureka. A farewell social was held at Taumarunui recently, in honour of Mr. Theo. Oates, who had resigned from the staff of the Taumarunui branch of the Bank of Australasia to take up farming in the Morrinsville district. A tribute to Mr. Oates’s popularity and sterling qualities was paid by Mr. C. D. Crawshaw, who presented Mr. Oates with a fountain pen as a token of the esteem in which he was held. * * • The resignation of the Rev. F. W. Wilkes from the Morrinsville Borough Council was received at the meeting of the council on Thursday. In his letter to the town clerk, Mr. Wilkes said he would ever retain happy memories of the cheerful atmosphere of the council meetings. On the motion of Crs. Martin and Reason, Cr. Wilkes’s resignation was accepted, and the clerk was instructed to take steps to fill the vacancy. The Thames Valley Electric Power Board is the fifth largest electricsupply authority in New Zealand, coming next after the boards or city councils in the four chief centres. Figures showing power supplied to the chief boards by the Government stations during the nine months of 1929 are as follow: Aucklaond, 43,274.000 units; Wellington, 38,291,000; Christchurch, 39,604,000; Dunedin. not available; Thames Valley, 20,819,000; Hawke’s Bay. 10.995,000; Manawatu, 14,702,000; Mutt Valley. 14,080,000: Wanganui, 12,072,000. At a meeting of the executive of the Morrinsville .Agricultural and Pastoral Society, it was resolved to ask Mr. F. Lye, M.P., to perform the official opening of the show. The following officials were appointed: Ground stewards, Messrs. R. C. Branch, Forbes, West, and G. Howie; entertainment stewards, Messrs. W. J. Aitken, P. S Philpott, F. J. Marshall, G. Howie, and A. H. J Wyatt; blackboard steward, Mr L. E. Pole. It was resolved to support the scheme suggested by the Auckland Provincial Council for the registration of side-shows.
